In August, while Barbara, Ellie and I were staying in West Yellowstone, we visited the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center. This place is where bears, wolves, and other wild animals who are unable to survive on their own in the wild are brought and given a home. It is a win win situation where the animals are well taken care of, and visitors can see and learn about them.
The bears are fed several times a day and they generally only let two bears into the feeding area at one time. This reduces the competition between the animals. As you can see there are numerous ravines hanging around in the feeding area. Ravines are scavengers and will eat anything the bears leave behind. So before feeding, the workers bring out the food and place it under the numerous rocks seen in the feeding area. The bears can smell the food and are strong enough to move the rocks to get to the food, but the ravines are not. So the bears get most of the food and the ravines get the leftovers, if they’re able to get to it. They’re forever hopeful.
They also use the bears to test containers to see if they can get into them. As you can see from the one photo, that containers didn’t pass the bear test.
So if you’re ever in the West Yellowstone area, be sure to visit the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center, you’ll be glad you did.
